Yu Xie recently published an article on the influence of social networks on scholastic career outcomes in the leading journal Science. Though most assume that merit is the only factor that affects academic milestones like membership in elite scientific organizations, Yu Xie synthesizes and reviews a number of works on the subject to argue that social forces heavily influence career progression in both the United States and in China. His study challenges the "unquestioned norm" of meritocratic "universalism" in knowledge production and contributes to increasing awareness of the social aspects of the social and non-social sciences.
