Xiaogang Wu was a PIIRS Global Scholar from 2020 to 2023. He has a continuing appointment as the Yufeng (御风) Global Professor of Social Science, Area Head of Social Sciences, and Director of the Center for Applied Social and Economic Research (CASER) at the New York University (NYU) Shanghai. Wu also holds an appointment as Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Science at NYU. Wu joined NYU Shanghai from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where he was a Professor and Chair of Social Science and Public Policy.

Wu received a B.A. from Renmin University of China, an M.A. from Peking University, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles. He was the Mellon Post-doctoral Fellow at the Population Studies Center and a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at University of Michigan, Ann Abor from 2001 to 2003. He joined HKUST afterward as an Assistant Professor of Social Science, rising to full professor in 2011. Wu was the recipient of the US National Academy of Education/Spencer Post-doctoral Research Fellowship for 2006 to 2007, the Asia and Asian American Early Career Award from the American Sociological Association in 2007, and the Prestigious Fellowship in Humanities and Social Sciences by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong in 2012. 

Wu is currently the President of the International Chinese Sociological Association and the founding editor of the Chinese Sociological Review
